       Japanese Maples

" I have always loved Japanese Maples.  My parents had one in their front yard for years when they lived in Southern Ontario and I was always in awe of it every time I went to visit. It was a dissectum...meaning that it had lacy leaves. It was also dark red...almost a wine colour. I found out years later it was a Burgandy Lace.  Ever since seeing it I wanted one or two someday. Well that someday has come.  My first Japanese Maple grown from seed was a Burgandy Lace. Now I am attempting to grow all sorts. I still have an affinity for the dissectums be they red, green or any colour in between."  - Kevin Cook

If you want seedlings go to our Japanese Maple Seedling section.

Note: Any of our seedlings are just seedlings grown from the seed of the named cultivar.  That means that they will not be an exact duplicate of their parent.  However, with luck you will get some seedlings that will look a lot like their parent cultivar or have unique characteristics of their own (that is how new cultivars are found!). I try to only keep seedlings that resemble their parent.

For information on how to PLANT your Japanese Maple go to "Planting Instructions", where there are specific instructions tailored to Japanese Maples.

Stunning! I simply love it....and it is extremely cold hardy!
Also known as Fern-Leaf or Dancing Peacock it has deeply lobed leaves, crimson autumn color, and plenty of small, reddish flowers in spring. It can be grown as a small tree or multi-stemmed shrub. Its growth habit is mounded, bushy, and spreading. The cultivar name 'Aconitifolium' refers to the fact that its ferny foliage resembles that of monkshood (Aconitum). This beautiful tree makes a great specimen plant and is very hardy.
Noteworthy characteristics: Good fall color; deeply lobed leaves; free-flowering.
Care: Average, well-drained soil in part shade (leaves may burn in full sun). Protect from strong winds. Stake for more upright growth, or leave alone to create a cascade of foliage. Prune only from late autumn to mid-winter.

Rough corky bark with creases, irregularities and longitudinal cracks make this a collector's item and a conversation piece. Perfect for bonsai, as the trunk texture gives an aged appearance. Rough bark appears after 5 years of age. The English translation means "rough bark".

Their Spring colour is a delicate light green leaf and contrasts with the fissured corky bark wonderfully!

Summertime brings out the green and by fall oranges and yellows prevail.
Surely a Bonzai enthusiasts dream. The bark alone only gets better with age, green breaking threw the bark like veins of blood.

I think this is one cool Japanese Maple. These babies are hard to get and extremely expensive.  On any Bonzai site 12-18" ones sell for over $200. My 4-5' babies are going for just $50. They won't be here long.

Japanese Maple Growing Zones: 5-8

Mature Width:  15-25 ft.

'Atrolineare' is one of the many varieties of Strapleaf Maples, characterized by their narrow, willow-like red leaves. It has been observed under many growing conditions that this particular variety retains its bright red color best throughout the summer months, making it more than desirable. 'Atrolineare' prefers to be planted in filtered to full sun and moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. With these conditions, this tree is likely to mature at a height of ten to twelve feet.

This red linearilobum with fine thread-like leaves makes a beautiful spring display before summers heat turns the leaves first bronze and then green. The late summer growth tends to have much wider lobes. The shape is generally vase shaped and open topped. Fall colour varies between red and orange. While 'Atrolineare' tolerates full sun in many areas, it will benefit greatly from some afternoon shade in hot climates.

Reminds one of Bamboo but red in colour.  It deserves a place in a Japanese Garden for sure!

I love the bold redness of the standard Japanese Maples...like the Atropurpureum. I find that they are very hardy and extremely beautiful.

Also they make amazing Bonzai specimens.

These are fantastic specimens with wonderful architectural, almost quirky habits. Others are more symmetrical. They have fine purple deeply divided leaves, turning red in autumn.

Seems to leaf out early.

A great starter Japanese Maple!

Always comes back with little winter die back.  I have one and never even protect it in the winter.  Plus I have a grove of them up on my land and they grow fast!

Zone:  5a-8
Height: 12-20ft
Width:  10 ft-20ft
Growth rate:  moderate to fast.
Habit:  Densely rounded at maturity. Faster growing when young.
Foliage: Five-lobed, rich crimson-red new leaves in spring, turning to bronze-green in summer, and then finally to rich crimson-red in autumn.
Sun:   partial sun
Flowers:  Inconspicuous.
Fruit:  Samaras in borne pairs.
Bark:  Greyish-purple.
Tolerances:  Adaptable to a range of soil types once established, but prefers a moist, well drained soil.
Comments: Should not be planted in exposed areas where hot summer winds may stress the tree. Leaves may suffer scorch in very hot sun.  Otherwise....easy to grow! It grows well as an understory tree, tolerating fairly dense shade.
Great for containers too! Very cold hardy.

The Bloodgood Japanese Maple is a much-sought-after specimen tree.  It maintains a beautiful reddish purple color through Spring and Summer. Very Hardy!

This little tree wrote the book on red foliage!

The Bloodgood’s bright red leaves first appear in the beginning of spring, right off its bright red stems.
In summer, the red deepens to a fabulous reddish-purple, followed by fire engine red fall color.
This larger sized Japanese Maple is a strong grower that easily adapts to climates and conditions from the West Coast to the Atlantic shoreline.
It isn’t just the colour of the foliage that makes the Bloodgood so stunning - the leaves themselves are a joy to behold. Intense color from spring through fall, with a unique shape.
Japanese Maples are always the focal point in any landscape... they give it a rich, distinguished look.
And Bloodgoods are the most popular variety of Japanese Maple. Their bright red foliage is unmatched, so you'll have amazing color throughout the year! I also gather seed locally!
This beautiful tree is easy to grow… be sure to put it where everyone can see it in your yard!

(Also known as 'Shishio Improved') One of the very best of the spring colour maples, with long lasting brilliant pink-red color that turns to green for the summer. The habit is graceful, and it is adaptable to many different locations.

Just beautiful~! The pinks in this one are amazing!

This is a small colourful shrub/tree!

The spring foliage is crimson. The spring colour is long-lasting and turns a gorgeous pink-red color until the beginning of summer when it turns an attractive green. In the fall the leaves turn an orange to red color. The bark of the young shoots are quite red on the upper side. This multi-branched, vigorous tree shrub grows between 6-8 ft. in 10 years. It is one of the best bright pink-red spring colour cultivars with almost no weaknesses. 'Chishio Improved' is a very graceful tree/shrub which adapts well to containers and can be used for bonsai culture.

An outstanding, fast-growing upright Japanese maple. Excellent deep red foliage holds even better than Acer Bloodgood!. Strong, hardy and easy to grow. Its 20-25' mature height makes it an excellent street tree or small yard specimen tree.

Beautiful tree that fills out fast, cold hardy and grows fast, keeps its colour long into summer and will give you pleasure for years to come!

The difference from Bloodgood is in that it has slightly translucent leaves. Another relative of the Acer Palmatum atropurpureum.

One of the nicest Palmatums! 'Glowing Embers' is an outstanding Japanese maple that was selected as Georgia's 2005 Gold Medal winner for its vigorous growth rate, brilliant fall colour and adaptability to a range of landscape conditions. 'Glowing Embers' provides a kaleidoscope of colours in fall as the leaves fade from green to purple, fluorescent orange or yellow, much like the ever-changing and mesmerizing embers of a wood fire. The colour sequence of each leaf varies as fall deepens. A single branch may display four distinctly different colours at the same time. 'Glowing Embers' is beautiful all year with its bright green leaf colour which turns different shades in the summer and fall. Unlike many Japanese maples that require shade and moist, organic soils, 'Glowing Embers' thrives in full sun and it tolerates drought better than most trees in its class.

The leaves of this very dwarf maple are tightly clumped along the ends of the branches giving 'Goshiki Kotohime' a unique appearance. This is supposed to be the variegated form of 'Kotohime' which will show some slight variegation or mottling to the leaves in northern climates.  Rather vigorous! New growth does emerge with rose-pink or bronze edges that only last a few days before turning light green for the rest of summer. Fall colour is nice for a dwarf ranging from yellow-orange to orange-red.
Miniature proportions, even when young, make it ideally suited for bonsai, rock garden or container culture.

Brilliant orange fall colour. Leaves are bright green in summer with a slightly down-turned tip. A most attractive small tree. The radiating warmth of orange-yellow fall colour is the outstanding feature of this maple. Compact growth responds well to pruning.

An older cultivar most known for the pumpkin orange fall colour. An upright somewhat stocky structure, slower growing and smaller than most of the trees in the amoenum group. A stunning display of fall colour when planted with the brilliant red 'Osakazuki'. Easy to grow and beautiful year round, a classic for every garden.

A vigorous grower with delicate, lacy burgundy leaves throughout summer turning brilliant crimson in fall; lovely tiered weeping habit on a dwarf plant, a perfect accent for the creative garden.

Inaba Shidare Cutleaf Japanese Maple will grow to be about 8 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 60 years or more.
This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is particular about its soil conditions, with a strong preference for rich, neutral soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder zones.

Fluorescent pink in the spring. Variegation follows the vein of the leaf changing to a two-toned red in the summer. This tree needs protection from excessive heat (not a problem in the Maritimes) and heavy soil but is well worth the care. Wonderful wide spreading habit, at least as wide as tall. Unique~

A spreading deciduous tree with brick-red leaves in spring. Leaves turn bronze-red in summer and are orange to red in fall. The name means "overhanging mountain" in Japanese. Prefers sun/partial shade in well-drained soil

Kasagi yama has different tones of red in each leaf each leaf. The primary color is a unique dark red with shadows of green. Veins are dark and visible. Excellent but very rare Japanese maple.

The growth habit is upright and forms a great vase shape that can be very useful in the landscape. The fall colour ranges from yellow to deep orange/red. Spring foliage is chartreuse. The tree is vigorous and grows well in sun or shade. The height can reach up to 20 feet over time and even at maturity retains the great vase-like shape. The name ‘Okushimo’ means “salt and pepper”. This is a very old cultivar that is underused because people are not informed about it. The unusual leaf structure and great color make ‘Okushimo’ a very complimentary addition when planted next to other cultivars.

I had to offer this one as the little leaves are so unique and bunched together.  I just love the green leaves all slightly curled on this specimen.  It would make a great container grown or bonsai specimen.

This is a diferent sort of upright maple, almost weeping willow like. When young 'Omure yama grows rather quick and up, but as the tree reaches maturity the long slender new growth cascades around the drip line of the tree. I have heard claims that this or that variety has the best fall color of any Japanese maple. I would not have the audacity to claim that about any cultivar but year in and year out I would say the reds, oranges and yellows of  'Omure yama' in fall are at least equal to any other variety we grow and sell.

This spectacular tree/shrub is one of the most outstanding laceleaf dissectums because of its unique orange color, thus the name 'Orangeola'. Orangeola is known for its bright spring foliage and its delicately cascading branches. The leaves have a somewhat glossy appearance that adds to its beauty as the Sun shines through the tree. Orangeola's finely dissected orange-red leaves make it a "showpiece" type tree. The orange colored leaves turn to a rich red-green as summer approaches. Weeks later a new flush of orange leaves arrive and continue throughout the summer. As the fall season arrives Orangeola's leaves turn dark red before turning a beautiful orange-red. Orangeola performs well in the Sun, especially compared to other laceleaf cultivars. Orangeola is a vigorous grower, yet is one of the smaller laceleaf dissectums, reaching 10 feet in height when fully grown. Orangeola is usually taller than wide. Orangeola is a somewhat rare cultivar. Its unique growth and bright colour contrast well with any landscape.

'Osakazuki' is a very famous cultivar known for its intense crimson colour. It is one of the oldest cultivars, having been listed in catalogs since the mid-1800's. All Japanese maples have good fall colors but the experts claim that 'Osakazuki' has the greatest vigor and most intense color of all of the Japanese maples. 'Osakazuki' has large leaves that seem to give the tree an air of orderliness. For most of the growing season the leaf color is a rich green. The leaves do not burn easily and have a durable texture. The beautiful fall color has been likened to that of a "burning bush". Even at dusk the color seems to glow. 'Osakazuki' grows rapidly for the first few years then slows down. This cultivar grows 7-10 ft. tall in 10 years and can reach 20 ft. in extreme old age. This upright tree becomes more branched and forms a round top as it ages. Since the leaves sometimes "cup" at the base, this cultivar is termed "saki-cup-like leaf", or 'Osakazuki'. This cultivar is outstanding in most everyway. When given a backdrop of green or yellow it is even more spectacular.

A much more true red rather than purple and holds it's red color through the summer Red Dragon has quickly become the favorite red dissectum. Overall smaller than most dissectum, with a smaller leaf, slower growth habit and black bark making this tree the best choice for a container, small garden or bonsai. A new superior maple from New Zealand. Deeply cut purple-red leaves have a distinctly different texture from the other dissectum types, and you might easily envision hundreds of red dragon’s claws hanging from this vigorous maple. Has held excellent red color in the summer, and is always a darker, more purplish red color than Crimson Queen. There are those who feel this cultivar could become the standard red dissectum sold in America. Grows 4-5’ in ten years.

Red Filigree Lace has, by far, the most finely cut, delicate foliage of all the Japanese Maples. Despite its very delicate appearance, we find the deep red foliage holds up quite well under high heat and humidity. It is a remarkably tough plant, but tough to propagate because of its delicate stems and a slow grower. It was found as a chance seedling by William Curtis of Sherwood, Oregon and was eventually acquired and distributed by Iseli Nursery in Boring, Oregon. It has a mounding habit, perhaps reaching 6-8’ with age. Full sun for best color; although it will do fine in light to moderate shade.

Coral Bark Maple is the other name for this outstanding selection. The younger branches are a bright coral red and are especially striking in winter. The fall foliage colour can be red to orange or yellow. Another one of my favourite palmatums.

The red-coral colour to the bark is due to cold temperatures in the winter. When the new light green leaves emerge in the spring on the coral bark it is a beautiful sight. The leaves remain green all summer and the bark colour lightens as the temperature rises. Fall colours are exquisite ranging from gold to orange to scarlet red. This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade and matures at about 15'. This versatility and winter interest make it a often requested cultivar.

'Seiryu' is a very unique Japanese maple that is unlike any in the world. Because it is so different, it is an incredible addition to any maple collection. First, it is extremely rare to have a dissectum grow in an upright form. Almost all other dissectums grow in a cascading or weeping form. 'Seiryu' is a strong upright grower with just the right amount of vigor. As 'Seiryu' matures it becomes multi-branched and gradually thickens to nice and shapely form. Seiryu's spring foliage is a refreshing bright green colour. Each lace-leaf tip has a splash of reddish tones as it unfolds. The leaves soon change to a uniform light green. In late summer reddish tones reappear on the exposed leaves. Seiryu's fall colours are quite spectactular and range from gold to light yellows with a suffusion of crimson in most leaves. The lace-leaves are slightly smaller and much thinner than other green dissectums. A must have for those who want a dissectum that will become a tree.

Also known as 'Lion's Head' is a small Japanese maple. It grows in a stiff vase shape. The lions head maple has short, stubby twigs growing from short branches covered with dense deep green foliage. Mature specimens form a broad oval. This combined with the densly layered ruffled branches give it the appearance of a lion's head, especially with the outstanding deep orange and yellow gold fall foliage. The lion's head maple is one of the last trees to turn color in the fall. It could be November before the foliage begins to take on a golden color.

It has attractive green foliage which emerges red in spring. The crinkled palm-shaped leaves are ornamentally significant and turn an outstanding harvest gold in the fall. It features subtle corymbs of burgundy flowers rising above the foliage in mid spring before the leaves. It produces red samaras from early to mid fall. The rough gray bark and red branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape.

The specimen gets its name from the famous mountain Tamukeya situated in Kyushu. The mountain is famous for having a shrine of a famous Japanese warrior in history recalled as Musahi Miyamoto.
The unique name of the maple tree actually means “hands folded in prayer upon the mountain. The term tamuke is usually used for spiritual offerings and acts. The Zen Buddhists were particularly familiar with this term as it was part of their daily practices.

'Tamukeyama' is one of the older Japanese maple cultivars with records dating back to the year 1710. This beautiful tree has outstanding foliage colour throughout the seasons. Tamukeyama's new foliage is a deep crimson-red when unfolding but soon turns to a dark-purple red. It is an excellent shade of dark red that holds until late summer. Its fall colour is a bright scarlet. 'Tamukeyama' holds its deep colour better than any other cultivar.  This hardy plant has a strong cascading form. Tamukeyama reaches 5 to 7 feet in height in ten years. This cultivar is considered by many to be the best, and the connoisseurs choice in red dissectums.

Trompenburg's beauty is difficult to describe unless seen in person. Trompenburg is a very fast growing Japanese maple that needs to be pruned more than most when it is young. As the tree matures it becomes much easier to manage and can have an almost breathtaking appearance. The leaves have a strong, durable texture that is not prone to sun burn. The slightly cupped leaves on this award winning cultivar give it an almost three dimensional appearance that adds to this tree's elegance and beauty. Trompenburg's unique leaf shape combined with the tree naturally beautiful structure makes it one of the most beautiful Japanese maples in the world today. The tree's leafstalks are red. The trees purple-red color lasts well into late summer. Trompenburg's fall color is crimson. This Dutch cultivar reaches 18-24 feet in height. This Japanese maple tree was named after the Trompenburg Arboretum in the Netherlands. The tree is a must for collectors, businesses and homeowners that enjoy larger Japanese maple trees. This somewhat rare tree is becoming more popular each day and is becoming a favorite in the landscape industry. True to its name, this variety maintains a somewhat columnar form, with burgundy to red foliage all season long, ending in a fiery display in fall; the dense and narrow upright form makes it wonderfully useful for many garden applications.

Twombly's Red Sentinel Japanese Maple is a dense deciduous tree with a narrowly upright and columnar growth habit. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.

Ukigumo is an outstanding variegated Acer palmatum cultivar, the light green leaves are variously softly speckled and blocked with a light dusky-pink interspersed with cream. In full sun, Ukigumo tends to turn pink in the upper most exposed leaves. Ukigumo is also known as the Floating Cloud Maple.

This is a rare and unique one.  Definitely for the coniseur.

A small to medium sized tree, Ukigumo in Japanese means 'Floating Cloud Tree'.  The new growth is variegated with white and green leaves mixed with pink. The growth habit is spreading with layers that Japanese translate to clouds. One of the finest maples in the variegated group.

Green Lace-leaf Japanese Maple. I love these dissectums! Broad-rounded habit. Branches often layered or sweeping toward the ground in weeping cultivars. Narrowly lobed leaves are often dissected creating a lacy appearance. Weeping cut leaf form with green foliage. Golden yellow fall colour.Dwarf growing and spreading with delicate, feathery, deeply cut green foliage and arching branches. Brilliant fall foliage.  Few plants can compare to the effect these choice cultivars create in the landscape. In winter the branching patterns are delicate and intricate with bold upward arching trunks and weeping stems. The lacy foliage changes its appearance as the seasons progress. Autumn foliage is colorful, and even the fallen leaves are attractive on the ground. Easy to grow, reasonably winter tolerant and slow to mature, these cultivars are suitable for virtually any garden. Most perform best in partial shade, and they are ideal as understory trees. Foliage colors tend to be more pronounced with higher light intensity.

A superb landscape choice valued for its finely-textured cutleaf foliage and shapely horizontally-cascading habit of growth; an excellent refined choice for small home landscapes, makes a great accent in the shrub border.

'Waterfall' is a top choice among small trees for all-season beauty, making this a collector's favourite. New foliage emerges red and matures to burgundy. Leaves are deeply cut and semi-pendant. Fall colour can range from apricot to firey red. Elegant, horizontal branching habit, reaching 6 feet in height by 10 feet in width, makes this plant interesting even during winter months and an excellent choice for night lighting. Thrives in partial shade and moist soil. The one pictured is mine!

Foliage is yellow-green in spring and darkens in summer! An amazing Japanese Maple. Spring foliage is a distinctive yellow-green that darkens in summer, with a spectacular blend of orange and red fall foliage occasionally suffused with purple.
In summer, bright red fruit often peeks from under dense leaves. Compact of habit, bushy, and freely branched, slowly attaining a mature height of 12 to 15 feet, with a slightly wider spread. Best in semi-shade.
